Mariko Kubo
Born in 1992. Born in Kagawa, but moved to Vietnam when she was 5 months old. Since then, she has repeatedly moved every 2.3 years, both in Japan and abroad.
Graduated from Tama Art University in 2018 with a major in oil painting.
Her motivation for creating artwork stems from her childhood experiences. From birth to more than 10 years of repeated relocations, she developed a complex of a weak sense of belonging and a fragile identity. During this troubled period, she had visions of "faces floating in the gaps between things and in the air," and her worries were soothed by these gazes.
Intrigued by the relationship between her identity troubles and the virtual creatures that she had visions of in order to digest them, she set his sights on creating and depicting paintings in order to explore the relationship between the two. Since then until today, she has consistently painted virtual creatures.
Aiming to express herself (virtual creatures) through painting, she entered the oil painting department of Tama Art University. Studied under Kazumi Nakamura and learned painting techniques and how to deal with painting in order to depict virtual creatures.
After graduating from the university, she continued to work on her artwork, thinking about and expressing identity and the boundary between self and others through the virtual creatures in her paintings. In addition to her ongoing oil paintings, she has begun to create works on transparent glass plates with drawings printed on them as "Creatures Floating in the Air".
