まゆげ
私の絵に度々登場する、飛ぶかもめのようなこの形は、一言で言うと眉毛です。きちんと説明すると、人間の頭部の、眼窩のくぼみの上側の稜線を表しています。
私は幼少期、仮想生物を幻視しましたが、それらは面白おかしく存在しているというよりは、静かにこちらを向いているという様子でした。視線を感じることで、孤独の不安を解消していたのかもしれません。なので、生物を描くときには、RecallingやEyes（別項参照）のようにたたずまいを描くものよりも、こちらを向いている顔を持つ生物にすることが多いです。
しかしながら、目そのものを描くことには抵抗がありました。リアルな人間の目を描いても、アニメチックに描いても、動物の目を描いても、その目を持つ生物の現実的な印象が与えられてしまい、心を癒すための幻想であるという感覚が損なわれると思ったからです。
これまで、目を描かずに視線を表現するために色々試してきました。眼窩から魚を飛び出させてみたり、目の部分を月に変えてみたり、蜘蛛に変えてみたり、目を閉じさせてみたり、いろいろしました。その中で一番しっくりきたのが、眼窩の稜線でした。
輪郭の中の少し上寄りのあたりに、眼窩の稜線を描くことで、視線を持つ顔面が超記号的に立ち上がります。眼球を描く必要はありません。
この眼窩の稜線の記号的な扱いは学生時代からたびたび用いてきました。初心に立ち帰り、描きたいものをストレートに表す上で、この眼窩の稜線、まゆげは、非常に重要だと考え、この度の展示のメインビジュアルに採用しました。

Eyebrow
This flying seagull-like shape that often appears in my paintings is, in a word, an eyebrow. To describe it properly, it represents the upper ridges of the eye sockets.
As a child, I had visions of virtual creatures, but rather than being amusingly present, they seemed to be quietly looking at me. Perhaps I was relieving my anxiety of loneliness by feeling their gaze. Therefore, when I draw creatures, I tend to make them with faces that look toward me rather than those that depict figures, such as "Recalling" or "Eyes" (see separate section) as an example.
However, I have resisted drawing the eyes themselves. This is because I felt that whether I drew realistic human eyes, cartoonish eyes, or animal eyes, it would give the viewer a realistic impression of the creature with the eyes and detract from the sense that they are an illusion that is meant to soothe the mind.
So far, I have tried various ways to express the gaze without drawing the eyes. I have tried making a fish pop out of the eye sockets, changing the eyes to the moon, changing it to a spider, having the eyes closed, and many other things. The one that felt best to me was the ridges of the eye sockets.
By drawing the ridge a little higher, the face with the gaze rises up in a super-symbolic way. There is no need to draw the eyes.
I have often used this symbolic treatment of the ridges since I was a student. Going back to my original intention, I thought that the ridges and the eyebrows were very important in expressing what I wanted to depict in a straightforward manner, so I decided to use them as the main visuals for this exhibition.
